About Us

How it Began:

The need was recognized in a simple way by Sandy Berg-Whiley who receives treatments for a chronic illness she endures. 

                           

During her first visit to the treatment center, Sandy became extremely uncomfortable and cold from her body temperature being lowered by the fluids and lonely atmosphere of her hospital room.

After this painful first visit she asked her mother, Joy Horrocks, to make her a soft and comforting fleece blanket to take along with her on future treatments. It not only helped to keep her warm and filled with a sense of security, but the fun colors and bright print of the blanket helped raise the spirits of all those around her!

                           

Sandy in turn began making hand-made blankets for other patients receiving chemo therapy, infusion, or similar treatments so that they too can be filled with “Joy” in their time of illness or hardship and she personally delivered them to various hospitals and treatment centers.

A nurse at one of the centers observed the impact that these blankets were making on the patients, and contacted the OC Register newspaper to interview Sandy about her good deeds. After the first article appeared in the OC Register, Sandy received hundreds and hundreds of emails from both volunteers and donors and it snowballed from there with additional hospitals and infusion centers requesting blankets for their patients.

Thus, The Joyful Foundation was born and continues to provide warmth and comfort to those who are in need!
